The Ministry of Culture commemorates the anniversary of the passing of Syrian actress May Skaf, remembering her remarkable artistic and humanitarian legacy. She left a lasting mark on Syrian drama while also standing in support of the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity and opposing the former regime following the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
Born in Damascus in 1969, May Skaf studied French Literature at the University of Damascus before beginning her acting career in the early 1990s. She appeared in numerous television productions that established her as one of the leading figures of Syrian drama, thanks to her distinguished performances and charismatic presence.
With the outbreak of the Syrian revolution, Skaf openly supported the popular movement, which led to her being arrested more than once by the former regime. In 2013, she left Syria for France, where she continued advocating for the causes of the Syrian people. Many came to refer to her as “the Free Artist” and “the Revolutionary Artist.”
On 1 August 2018, May Skaf passed away in Paris at the age of 49. Her artistic legacy and humanitarian values continue to live on in Syria’s cultural memory, as she is remembered as one of the artists who combined creative excellence with a deep commitment to the issues of society.
