Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa received on Tuesday at the People’s Palace in Damascus the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, and his accompanying delegation, as part of a visit focused on strengthening cooperation in the field of nuclear medicine.
The visit coincided with the inauguration by the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education, of a new brachytherapy system at Al-Bairouni Hospital within the Al-Mouwasat Medical Complex in Damascus. The system aims to destroy cancer cells and reduce tumors, contributing to the development of radiotherapy services for cancer patients and supporting the healthcare sector and scientific research in Syria.
During the inauguration ceremony, Grossi affirmed that the IAEA continues to support Syria through the provision of equipment and training, noting that the level of this support remains below the desired level. He expressed his satisfaction with the improvement in conditions witnessed in the country, stressing the agency’s support for Syria in addressing humanitarian challenges.
Grossi highlighted that the credit for this achievement primarily belongs to the medical and healthcare teams, revealing that the agency is currently working on supplying computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanners. He also expressed his personal commitment to completing this step as soon as possible.
