The First Syrian Hijabi Woman in Germany to Drive an 18-Metre-Long Bus Weighing 12 Tonnes

Dimasheq – Germany – News

From Damascus to Germany, Syrian woman Susan Shaghlil has written her own success story, proving that determination can make the impossible possible.

Susan lives in the German town of Gerstetten. She has managed to overcome numerous challenges and obstacles to become the first Syrian woman wearing a hijab to drive an 18-metre-long bus weighing 12 tonnes through the streets of the German city of Heidenheim.

Susan’s journey was far from easy. Obtaining a bus driving licence (Busführerschein) in Germany requires passing the IHK examination, widely regarded as particularly challenging. The exam covers more than 2,000 pages of regulations and complex mechanical concepts, all in German. It is notorious for its difficulty, with many candidates failing, including native Germans.

However, through determination and perseverance, Susan successfully passed both the written and oral examinations on her first attempt, without needing anyone’s help.

Susan concluded her story with a message to every Syrian and Arab mother wearing a hijab in Germany:

“Thank God, I studied hard, worked tirelessly and succeeded on my first attempt through my own efforts and determination, without any connections or anyone’s help. I succeeded to tell every Syrian and Arab mother that age is just a number and that nothing is impossible. I also wanted to prove to every young woman who wears a hijab that her hijab has never been, and will never be, an obstacle to achieving her ambitions. And I did it so that my daughter can be proud of me in the future.”
