The Ministry of Culture commemorates the passing anniversary of the great Syrian poet Omar Abu Risha, one of the most prominent pioneers of modern Arabic poetry. His poems represented a distinctive milestone, combining the authenticity of heritage with the innovation of modernity, while expressing the concerns of homeland and humanity through a refined poetic spirit and captivating language.

Born in 1908, Abu Risha received his education in Aleppo and Beirut before continuing his studies in Britain, where his cultural experience contributed to shaping his poetic talent. He was distinguished by his creativity in renewing Arabic poetry while preserving its eloquence and the beauty of its artistic imagery.

He served as Director of the National Library of Aleppo and was selected as a member of the Arabic Language Academy. He also pursued a distinguished diplomatic career, representing Syria as a cultural attaché, minister plenipotentiary, and ambassador in several countries around the world.

Omar Abu Risha dedicated his poetry to defending the causes of homeland and nation, and opposing injustice and colonialism. He left behind a rich literary legacy of poetry collections that established his position among the great Arab poets, earning him widespread recognition and numerous Arab and international honors.

He passed away on July 14, 1990, yet his poetic voice remains alive in the Arab consciousness, and his literary legacy continues to stand as one of the luminous landmarks in the journey of Arab culture.
