The Latakia Antiquities Department continues documenting the archaeological artifacts displayed at the National Museum and the Museum Garden as part of a scientific plan aimed at completing a comprehensive database of archaeological collections. The initiative seeks to ensure that the artifacts are properly documented and preserved in accordance with recognized standards in museum management and heritage conservation.
The documentation process includes preparing comprehensive scientific records for each archaeological artifact, covering its archaeological and artistic description, dimensions, materials, and current condition, as well as accurately identifying its location within the museum or Museum Garden. Engineering plans and the necessary technical documentation are also being prepared, contributing to the organization of conservation and restoration processes and the efficient management of museum collections.
The department emphasized that these efforts are part of ongoing work to develop a scientific and digital documentation system for archaeological collections. This system will provide an accurate database to support researchers and specialists, help protect cultural heritage from loss or deterioration, and enhance the efficiency of museum collection management.
These steps are part of the efforts of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums to preserve Syria’s cultural heritage and document its components using the latest scientific methods. They aim to ensure the sustainability of this heritage and its transmission to future generations, while strengthening its role in supporting scientific research and promoting awareness of Syria’s civilizational history.
