The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Friday that it had carried out what it described as a “surprise attack” targeting a U.S. Special Operations command center at the Al-Tanf base in southern Syria. According to the IRGC, the operation was launched in retaliation for the killing of Iranian soldiers in the city of Iranshahr.
In a statement, the IRGC claimed that the attack destroyed a radar system and several helicopters belonging to U.S. forces, and alleged that a number of American soldiers were killed during the operation. No immediate comment has been issued by the United States regarding these claims.
The announcement comes one day after the Syrian Ministry of Interior said it had foiled an attempt to smuggle a shipment of advanced weapons and missiles across the Syrian-Iraqi border, alleging that the cargo was intended for Hezbollah in Lebanon.
