Andrew Tabler, the former director for Syria at the U.S. National Security Council, stated that Damascus is handling the Iran war with caution, pursuing a calculated policy that balances avoiding escalation with safeguarding its security and strategic interests.
In an article published by Al Majalla, Tabler explained that the Syrian government has diplomatically aligned itself with Arab states and the United States in condemning Tehran’s policies, while also working to strengthen border security and avoiding direct involvement in any regional escalation. At the same time, it has maintained its focus on the Israeli file, reflecting the delicate balance required during the transitional phase currently facing state institutions.
Tabler noted that Damascus has shown clear alignment with U.S. objectives aimed at limiting the influence of Hezbollah in Lebanon, highlighting the group’s role in supporting former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime throughout the years of the Syrian conflict.
He argued that President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s cautious approach is closely tied to the domestic security situation, as Syria’s military and security institutions are still undergoing restructuring and unification after years of conflict and fragmentation.
He added that the Syrian government is currently focused on consolidating control over its territory and strengthening internal stability, making it unable to bear the consequences of opening new fronts in Lebanon or Iraq. He warned that any Syrian involvement in the Lebanese arena could carry significant risks for both Damascus and Washington.
