The Ministry of Interior announced on Thursday that it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of advanced weapons across the Syrian-Iraqi border. The shipment was reportedly intended for the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
According to the ministry, the operation was carried out after security forces detected a vehicle parked in the border area under suspicious circumstances. Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers discovered a cache containing long-range missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).
The ministry stated that preliminary investigations, based on evidence and findings collected during the operation, indicated that the shipment was intended to transit through Syrian territory en route to Lebanon for Hezbollah.
The Ministry of Interior affirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover all the circumstances surrounding the case and to identify everyone involved, as well as the networks linked to the smuggling operation.
