The Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Museum in Prague, in the presence of and signed by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Damascus, Mr. Vítězslav Pivoňka, and the Director-General of Antiquities and Museums, Dr. Masoud Badawi. The agreement marks an important step toward strengthening cultural and scientific cooperation between the two sides and expanding their partnership in the fields of archaeology and museums.
The memorandum provides for the renewal of the agreement governing the joint Syrian-Czech archaeological mission at the archaeological site of Tell Al-Shamiya in Latakia Governorate. This will contribute to the continuation of archaeological research, excavation, and study activities at the site, as well as the documentation of scientific findings in accordance with the latest international standards.
The agreement also aims to broaden cooperation in the areas of museum support and development, the exchange of technical and scientific expertise, and the implementation of specialized training programs designed to enhance the capacities of professionals working in the antiquities and museum sectors. These programs will focus on conservation, restoration, and museum collection management.
Both parties emphasized the importance of this step in strengthening cultural ties between Syria and the Czech Republic and advancing joint efforts to protect and preserve cultural heritage. The memorandum reflects the depth of scientific and cultural cooperation between the institutions responsible for heritage preservation in both countries.
