Dimasheq – Culture

The art of Arabic calligraphy in Syria carries the fragrance of a civilization deeply rooted in history. Throughout the ages, Damascus has been one of the most prominent cultural centers that contributed to the flourishing of this authentic art. It hosted renowned schools and calligraphers who left a remarkable mark on its development, transforming Arabic letters in their hands into artistic compositions alive with beauty and creativity.

Drawing on this rich cultural heritage, the National Center for Visual Arts in the Baramkeh area of Damascus is organizing the Syrian Forum for Arabic Calligraphy and Ornamentation from August 11 to 15. The cultural and artistic event celebrates the creativity of Syrian calligraphers and highlights the prominent position of Arabic calligraphy as one of the most important elements of Syria’s cultural and civilizational identity.

The forum aims to showcase Syrian artistic talent in Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation, while providing a space for artists to meet and exchange expertise. It also seeks to introduce visitors to different calligraphic schools and highlight the aesthetic and artistic values embodied in this ancient art, contributing to its preservation and maintaining its presence within the cultural scene.

The forum also provides an opportunity to strengthen younger generations’ interest in Arabic calligraphy and encourage them to learn and practice it, helping ensure the continuity of this cultural heritage and its transmission into the future. This comes as part of broader efforts to preserve Syrian cultural heritage and revive traditional arts that have long formed an integral part of the national identity.

The event is being held under the slogan “In Syria, Every Letter Has a Story,” affirming that the Arabic letter in Syria is not merely a means of writing, but an art, a culture, and a history. Within its curves lies the memory of a civilization that has endured for centuries and continues to inspire artists and creators to this day
