Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa received United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday at the People’s Palace in Damascus, marking the first visit by a UN Secretary-General to Syria in 17 years.
Following his arrival in Damascus, Guterres said in a post on X that his visit was an expression of solidarity with the Syrian people, stressing that the United Nations stands with Syria during what he described as a pivotal stage.
He said his message was clear: the international organization continues to support Syria, calling on the international community to step up its efforts and provide all forms of assistance to the Syrian people during the current phase.
The UN Secretary-General’s visit includes a series of official meetings and field visits focusing on humanitarian, economic, and cultural issues. The program includes a visit to Old Damascus and Saydnaya Prison, meetings with families of victims and survivors of the chemical attacks in Douma, as well as discussions with national investigative committees examining the events in Sweida and the coastal region.
The visit also includes a tour of Quneitra Governorate, meetings with economic stakeholders, and a meeting with the Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly, as part of efforts to explore ways to support Syria and strengthen cooperation with the United Nations in the coming phase.
