Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Basel Abdul Hannan affirmed that redeveloping Syria’s cotton sector requires a gradual vision and integrated policies linking agriculture with industry. He noted that continuous coordination is underway with the Ministry of Agriculture to prepare plans targeting the eastern region, the country’s main cotton-producing area.

His remarks came during a panel discussion held as part of the Syria International Textile Exhibition “Nass Tex 2026” in Damascus, where participants stressed that restoring the country’s cotton cultivation and textile industries is an economic priority to support recovery efforts and strengthen national production.

Abdul Hannan explained that the private sector has gradually begun expanding its presence in the field, alongside efforts to address the challenges that have affected the sector in recent years and to create a more stable and attractive investment environment. He added that the next phase will focus on attracting new investments and providing suitable conditions for companies seeking to develop the cotton value chain and related industries, contributing to higher added value for local products and creating new employment opportunities.

For his part, Adham Al-Tabbaa, a member of the Board of Directors of the Damascus and Rif Dimashq Chamber of Industry, said that the textile industry is showing positive signs with private companies entering the production sector. He revealed that new studies and projects are underway to establish and develop spinning mills in cooperation with investors and industrialists, enhancing the sector’s capabilities and supporting plans to revitalize it.
