Dimasheq

Canadian Ambassador to Syria and Lebanon, Gregory Galligan, praised Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s decision to appoint 70 members to the People’s Assembly, describing the move as a new and significant milestone in the country’s ongoing transitional phase.

In a statement published through his official accounts, Galligan said that the appointment of the Assembly members represents “another important step in Syria’s transition journey,” noting that attention is now turning to the Assembly’s expected role as it prepares to hold its first session.

The Canadian ambassador added that the international community is looking forward to the People’s Assembly contributing to advancing reforms, strengthening political participation, and reinforcing state institutions, helping to build a more stable and prosperous future for all Syrians.

The formation of the new People’s Assembly comes as part of the measures associated with Syria’s transitional phase, amid expectations that the Assembly will play a legislative and oversight role in supporting political reform and addressing the country’s ongoing challenges.
