The Syrian Ministry of Culture commemorated the anniversary of the martyrdom of Yusuf al-Azma, Syria’s Minister of War, recalling the life of one of the country’s most prominent national figures, whose name remains closely associated with the Battle of Maysalun in 1920—a pivotal episode in modern Syrian history and a lasting symbol of resistance and the defense of national sovereignty.
The Ministry highlighted that al-Azma chose to stand at the forefront against the advancing French forces, driven by his conviction that protecting the homeland and preserving national dignity demanded courage and profound sacrifice, despite his awareness of the overwhelming imbalance of power at the time.
He was killed on the battlefield, and his story subsequently became an enduring symbol of devotion, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to his homeland.
The Ministry noted that Yusuf al-Azma’s legacy continues to occupy a prominent place in the Syrian collective memory, as his life embodied values of courage, responsibility, loyalty, and dedication to the nation, while his sacrifice has remained a source of inspiration for successive generations.
It added that commemorating his legacy provides an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of preserving Syria’s national heritage and historical memory, while drawing lessons from figures who left a lasting mark on the country’s history.
The Ministry stressed that Yusuf al-Azma will continue to be remembered as one of the foremost symbols of national pride and as a distinguished chapter in Syria’s modern history.
