The Ministry of Interior Announces the Arrest of a Former Military Official in Connection with Investigations into Human Rights Violations
The Ministry of Interior announced that Internal Security units, in coordination with the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, carried out a rapid security operation that resulted in the arrest of Major General Wajih Ali Al-Abdullah, who served as Director of the Military Affairs Office for former President Bashar al-Assad for nearly thirteen years.
According to the statement, Al-Abdullah was considered one of the close figures within the former regime’s military circle and played a coordinating role within the military structure during his tenure at the Presidential Palace, a period associated with allegations of violations committed against civilians.
Records indicate that Al-Abdullah assumed his duties in the Military Affairs Office in 2005 and remained in the position until 2018, a period described as one of the most sensitive phases in the country’s history in terms of security and political conditions.
His arrest falls within a broader series of measures aimed at pursuing former senior military officials accused of committing violations during the era of the former regime, as part of efforts to complete the necessary legal proceedings against them.
