Syrian Interior Ministry Announces Arrest of Former Officer Accused of War Crimes and Sabotage Activities

Dimasheq

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday the arrest of Karam Hafez Ibrahim, who is accused of involvement in war crimes against civilians during the rule of the former regime, as well as subsequent sabotage activities.

The ministry stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect graduated from the Military Academy with a specialization in artillery and served in several military formations. He commanded an artillery unit in Suwayda Governorate and took part in shelling civilian neighborhoods and areas in Daraa Governorate during the years of the Syrian revolution, before being transferred to combat fronts in Homs and Idlib.

The ministry added that investigations also showed his involvement in the events of March 6 last year, during which he allegedly targeted a security convoy. He later moved to the Naval Academy, where he participated in shelling security forces with artillery before fleeing after security forces regained control of the area.

According to the ministry, the suspect also participated in what it described as an “inciting gathering” called for by Ghazal Ghazal. Authorities reportedly seized a military handgun in his possession, which he allegedly intended to use against security forces. He is also accused of assigning another individual to monitor the movements of the Internal Security Forces.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the suspect has been referred to the competent authorities to complete the investigation and take the necessary legal measures.
