The Syrian General Establishment for Railways has begun rehabilitating the fuel tanks belonging to its Latakia branch, in preparation for putting them back into service after they were subjected to theft and vandalism in recent months.
Mohammad Al-Hajji, Deputy Head of the Latakia Railway Branch, said the current work includes carrying out the necessary measurements and technical inspections of the tanks, calibrating them, determining the quantities of fuel stored inside, and checking the level of impurities. The aim is to assess their technical condition and identify the maintenance and rehabilitation work required before they are put back into operation.
Al-Hajji explained that the inspection and rehabilitation operations are being carried out by a joint committee comprising representatives from the Directorate of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, the Fuel Company, and the Syrian General Establishment for Railways. The committee is responsible for completing the required technical procedures and verifying the safety and operational readiness of the tanks.
He noted that the theft and vandalism affecting the tanks required detailed inspections and assessments to determine the extent of the damage and ensure compliance with safety and efficiency requirements before they are put back into use.
He stressed that the rehabilitation of the fuel tanks is part of efforts to restore the readiness of the facilities and equipment at the Latakia railway branch, enhance its capacity to resume operations, and make optimal use of its infrastructure.
