Mazen Alloush, Director of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation at the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs, said that the agreement to take over Berth No. 4 at Tartous Port represents an important step toward strengthening the port’s operational capabilities and increasing its capacity to receive vessels and handle various types of cargo.

Alloush explained that the berth extends for 630 meters and has a variable draft ranging from 10 meters on the eastern side to 13.20 meters on the western side, giving it technical specifications that enable it to accommodate vessels with large sizes and cargo capacities.

He noted that Berth No. 4 is located adjacent to Berth No. 5, which is designated for roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels. These ships are designed to transport wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks, buses, heavy machinery, and railway cars. Such vehicles can enter and leave the vessel via dedicated ramps without the need for cranes.

Alloush pointed out that the proximity of the two berths provides greater opportunities for integration in vessel reception and cargo-handling operations, helping to organize shipping traffic and improve the efficiency of logistics operations within the port.

He added that the technical specifications of Berth No. 4 allow it to accommodate three large vessels simultaneously, with cargo capacities of up to 55,000 tons. The berth can also benefit from its proximity to warehouses and storage areas, allowing for the storage of various types of cargo.

Alloush stressed that taking over the berth represents another step toward developing the infrastructure of Tartous Port and strengthening its role in maritime trade and transportation, enhancing its capacity to handle shipping traffic and improving the efficiency of logistics services provided to vessels and cargo.
