The General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs announced on Monday that it had foiled an attempt to smuggle a quantity of diesel fuel via the Syrian coast and arrested several people allegedly involved in the operation.
The Authority said that Coast Guard forces, during a security operation, seized the quantity of diesel prepared for smuggling. Preliminary investigations revealed that a former officer in the forces of the Assad regime was among those detained.
The Authority added that investigations are still underway to fully uncover the circumstances of the operation and identify all those involved and any entities linked to it, in preparation for taking the necessary legal measures against them.
The Authority stressed that foiling the operation is part of the Coast Guard’s efforts to monitor territorial waters, secure the Syrian coastline, and combat smuggling and other illegal activities by intensifying maritime patrols, surveillance
