Anika Claßen Idris, spokesperson for the German Foreign Office for the Middle East and North Africa, stated that the air transport agreement signed between Syria and Germany represents the first practical step in implementing the joint action plan agreed upon by Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during their meeting in March.
In a post on the platform X, Idris described the agreement as “a promising beginning for Syria toward a better future.” She reaffirmed Germany’s support for the ongoing process, stressing that its success requires the participation of all components of Syrian society.
She also noted that Syria has managed to achieve a degree of stability within a relatively short period despite regional challenges and developments. Idris added that the discussions also addressed the political framework for the reconstruction process, as well as the role that Syrians living in Germany could play in supporting these efforts.
