The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the relevant authorities in the country have approved a request submitted by the German government to deport German national Eva Maria Michelmann to Germany, following the completion of the necessary procedures and coordination with the German side.
In an official statement, the ministry explained that Michelmann had been present in northeastern Syria, where she participated alongside members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) during military operations that took place in Raqqa Governorate in previous years. The statement added that Syrian authorities arrested her together with a senior leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) after monitoring their movements within Syrian territory.
According to the statement, the German national entered Syria illegally and remained for an extended period in areas that were outside the control of the Syrian state, prompting the authorities to take legal measures against her in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that it coordinated with the German Embassy in Damascus and the relevant Syrian authorities to ensure all consular assistance requirements were provided to the German citizen during her detention. These measures included permitting regular consular visits, conducting necessary medical examinations, and allowing embassy representatives to review her conditions and circumstances of detention.
The ministry stressed that these procedures were carried out in line with Syria’s commitments under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, ensuring respect for the consular rights of foreign nationals detained on Syrian territory and facilitating cooperation with concerned states in matters of a humanitarian and legal nature.
The deportation decision comes within the framework of ongoing cooperation between Damascus and Berlin on consular affairs, enabling the German national to return to her country and complete any related legal procedures before the competent German authorities.
