Marking the anniversary of the passing of pioneering Syrian artist Fateh Moudarres, Minister of Culture Mohammad Yassin Al-Saleh has directed the restoration of the artist’s studio as part of a national initiative titled “Restoring Syria’s Artistic Memory.” The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Damascus Foundation for Culture, Thought, Arts and Development, under the artistic supervision of painter Khaled Al-Attar, the foundation’s representative.
The initiative comes within the Ministry of Culture’s efforts to preserve Syria’s artistic legacy and safeguard the nation’s visual memory by protecting artists’ studios, collections, and creative spaces associated with the country’s most prominent painters. These spaces will be transformed into vibrant cultural venues dedicated to documentation, research, exhibitions, and the hosting of artistic and cultural activities.
The ministry emphasized that Fateh Moudarres’ studio holds exceptional artistic and historical significance, as it witnessed the creation of many of his most influential works, which established him as one of the leading figures of modern Syrian and Arab art in the twentieth century. Restoration works will include rehabilitating the building while preserving its original architectural character, as well as conserving its contents to ensure its long-term preservation and accessibility for future generations.
The Damascus Foundation for Culture, Thought, Arts and Development will implement the project in coordination with the Ministry of Culture and under the artistic supervision of Khaled Al-Attar, in accordance with a cooperation agreement with the studio’s administration and artist Issam Darwish, ensuring the highest standards of historical and artistic conservation.
The project marks the first in a series of initiatives planned by the Ministry of Culture to document and protect Syria’s artistic heritage and restore recognition to the places that played a vital role in shaping the country’s artistic movement. These efforts aim to strengthen their presence within Syria’s cultural landscape while reinforcing national memory as a cornerstone of identity and creativity.
Fateh Moudarres is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in Syrian and Arab visual arts, leaving behind a rich artistic and humanitarian legacy that continues to attract the interest of researchers, critics, and art enthusiasts both in Syria and abroad. Born in Aleppo in 1922, he studied art in Rome before returning to Syria, where he became one of the pioneers of modernism in the Syrian art movement.
Moudarres was renowned for his distinctive visual style, drawing inspiration from the Syrian landscape, mythology, humanity, and collective memory to create a unique artistic identity for Syrian painting. His work earned widespread recognition at Arab and international forums, and throughout his career he participated in dozens of exhibitions, leaving an enduring creative legacy that remains one of the defining chapters in the history of modern Syrian art.
