The sheikhs and residents of the city of Jaramana, in the Damascus countryside, affirmed in an official statement their rejection of the chants voiced by a number of young men following a gathering held at Al-Waqf Hall. The event was organized in coordination with the Syrian government, after obtaining the necessary permits, to offer condolences to the families of the victims on the first anniversary of the tragic events that took place in Sweida Governorate.
The statement explained that the emotional atmosphere surrounding the gathering prompted a number of young men to assemble and move into the city’s streets, where some of them chanted slogans described by the statement as unacceptable. It stressed that these chants do not reflect the position of Jaramana’s residents, nor do they represent their values or orientations.
The statement added that the city’s sheikhs and community leaders intervened to contain the situation and prevent any escalation, while reaffirming the importance of preserving Syria’s unity and cohesion among all its communities, and upholding national unity and civil peace.
It further emphasized that Jaramana is an integral part of the Ghouta of Damascus, that its destination is Damascus, and that its people are partners in building a unified Syrian homeland.
In conclusion, the sheikhs and residents of Jaramana called for strengthening the values of love and peace, rejecting all rhetoric that incites discord or threatens the country’s social fabric. They affirmed that Syria’s future can only be built through the unity of its people, respect for state institutions, and the rule of law.
