Under the patronage of the Damascus Governorate and the Ministry of Culture, the Riwaq Forum for Syrian Heritage is organizing “Craft in the Spotlight,” a cultural event dedicated to showcasing a number of traditional Syrian crafts that are at risk of disappearing, while honoring the artisans who have preserved this rich cultural heritage and passed it down through generations.
The event will focus on five of Damascus’ oldest traditional crafts: the Kamarji (bow maker), Qamarji, weaving, glassmaking, and coppersmithing. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artisans, hear their personal stories and experiences, and discover the techniques and traditions behind these professions, which have long been an integral part of Damascus’ identity and living heritage.
The event will also open discussions on the importance of safeguarding traditional crafts and exploring ways to preserve and revive them, ensuring that they are passed on to future generations as an essential part of Syria’s cultural memory.
The event will take place on Friday and Saturday, July 3–4, at 6:00 p.m. at Azm Palace in Damascus. Organizers invite the public and heritage enthusiasts to attend this unique gathering, which celebrates the creativity of Syrian artisans and emphasizes the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship as a fundamental component of the nation’s cultural identity.
“Craft in the Spotlight” is more than an exhibition of traditional crafts—it is a call to rediscover the value of the people who have devoted their lives to preserving these professions, and a reminder that protecting cultural heritage begins with supporting and recognizing those who keep Damascus’ rich legacy alive.
