Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Al-Albi, warned that Israeli occupation practices in southern Syria are undermining the country’s efforts to establish security and stability.
During a UN Security Council session on Tuesday addressing the situation in the Middle East, Al-Albi said that occupation forces are advancing into villages and agricultural lands, uprooting trees, spraying crops and forests with unknown chemicals, reinforcing military fortifications, and taking control of water resources. He noted that these violations were confirmed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which has called for immediate and independent investigations.
On another front, Al-Albi reaffirmed Syria’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and its backing of full UN membership for Palestine. He also called for pressure on Israel to lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip and allow the entry of humanitarian aid, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Al-Albi further stressed Damascus’s condemnation of Iranian attacks on Gulf countries and Jordan, expressing full solidarity with these states. He also denounced Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a violation of international law and a threat to global energy security.
