The Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs has denied any outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease inside Syria, stressing that the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture’s decision to suspend the transit of Syrian livestock through Iraqi territory to the Gulf states was based on inaccurate information and not on official reports or confirmed epidemic cases.
Mazen Alloush, Director of Relations at the Authority, explained that the Syrian side had directly contacted the Iraqi authorities and officially informed them that there was no epidemic outbreak that would justify such measures. He emphasized that veterinary quarantine decisions or bans on imports and transit should be based on documented cases in accordance with international veterinary standards.
Alloush also pointed out that Syrian livestock exports continue normally through Jordan and Syrian ports, without any health-related remarks from importing countries, considering this clear evidence against the circulating claims of a disease outbreak.
He further suggested that certain parties may be attempting to divert transit routes away from Iraq in a way that harms Syrian trade movement with the Gulf countries, affirming the continuation of coordination with the Iraqi side to resolve the issue and avoid any measures that could negatively affect the interests of breeders and traders.
