The Syrian Search and Rescue Team returned to Damascus on Saturday after completing its humanitarian mission in Venezuela, where it took part in emergency response operations following the earthquake that struck the country on June 24. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 4,000 people and injured at least 16,000 others.
During a reception ceremony at Damascus International Airport, Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed Al-Saleh, said the team embodied the spirit of humanitarian work that transcends borders, praising its professionalism, discipline, and dedication. He added that the team served as an exemplary representative of Syria and its people.
Al-Saleh stated that the team had successfully completed its mission with outstanding efficiency, humanitarian commitment, and a strong sense of national responsibility. He noted that Syrians have transformed the hardships their country has endured into a message of solidarity with disaster-affected communities, while sharing the expertise they have gained through their own experiences.
The minister also stressed that the team’s participation in relief efforts in Venezuela highlights the importance of adopting a more united and cooperative approach to responding to natural disasters. He recalled that Syria faced similar challenges in 2023, when it was left to confront the devastating earthquake largely on its own.
Al-Saleh concluded by commending the team’s performance, saying the humanitarian mission reflected the noble values of the Syrian people and helped present a positive image of Syria on the international stage.
