On Saturday, the Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of Raafat Anwar Al-Amoudi, one of the most wanted individuals accused of working for the “Popular Committees” militia affiliated with the former regime in Daraa Governorate. The arrest comes as part of ongoing efforts to pursue those involved in human rights violations that took place in the governorate over recent years.
In a statement, the ministry said that preliminary investigations revealed Al-Amoudi’s involvement in arrest and enforced disappearance operations targeting several residents of Daraa, in direct coordination with security agencies of the former regime. It noted that investigative records showed he worked under the supervision of the former Military Security Branch chief, Brigadier General Wafiq Al-Nasser, as well as under the direction of Assistant Officer Osama Abu Jafar.
The ministry added that available evidence indicated close cooperation between Al-Amoudi and the Air Force Intelligence Branch, which was led by Colonel Qusay Miheib, where he played a key role in pursuing wanted individuals and handing them over to security agencies.
According to the ministry, his activities were not limited to handing over wanted persons, but also extended to financial extortion of the families of detainees. He reportedly contacted them and demanded large sums of money in exchange for promises of releasing their sons, which later turned out to be false and not based on any actual procedures.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to uncover further details related to the case and to identify all individuals and networks involved, in preparation for referring them to the competent judicial authorities to take the necessary legal action against them.
