Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi, announced the accession of the Syrian Arab Republic to the “Friends Group on Combating Technology-Facilitated Human Trafficking,” in response to an official invitation received by the Syrian mission from the delegation of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
During a speech delivered at UN headquarters, Alabi explained that the decision to join stems from Syria’s recognition of the seriousness of this transnational crime, and the various violations the Syrian people have endured over past decades, including human trafficking crimes and the exploitation of humanitarian conditions to achieve illicit gains at the expense of civilians’ suffering.
He noted that Syria’s experience, along with its geographical location as a key transit point along several regional routes, has given it practical expertise in addressing challenges related to terrorism and transnational organized crime. He added that this experience includes combating human trafficking networks and drug trafficking, particularly captagon, in cooperation with a number of international partners and relevant authorities.
Alabi affirmed that Syria’s accession to this group reflects its commitment to strengthening international cooperation and exchanging expertise and information in the field of combating human trafficking, especially in light of technological developments that are increasingly exploited by criminal networks to facilitate recruitment, transportation, and exploitation.
He stressed Syria’s readiness to work closely with all member states of the group and with relevant UN institutions, with the aim of supporting international efforts to prevent these crimes, prosecute perpetrators, and protect victims, thereby contributing to enhancing security, stability, and respect for human rights at both regional and international levels.
