Syrian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Marwan Al-Halabi, met with the Turkish Ambassador to Damascus, Nuh Yılmaz, to discuss prospects for enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the field of higher education. The discussions included the accreditation and certification of degrees issued by Turkish universities operating in northern Syria, as well as a proposed project to establish a joint Syrian-Turkish university within Syrian territory.
The meeting addressed the possibility of integrating current students into the University of Aleppo and preparations for a joint meeting scheduled for July to discuss outstanding issues related to Turkish universities and their future, with the aim of reaching appropriate solutions. The two sides also reviewed a draft memorandum of understanding concerning the establishment of the joint university and discussed the Turkish side’s vision for the project.
Al-Halabi explained that the Higher Education Council recently approved the accreditation and certification of degrees awarded by branches of Turkish universities in northern Syria, as well as the recognition of degrees issued by Turkish universities. This decision enables students to have their certificates certified through the University of Aleppo and to enroll in postgraduate programs within Syria.
For his part, the Turkish ambassador praised the measures taken by the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education, particularly those related to the certification and equivalency of Turkish degrees. He stressed the importance of reaching a joint solution regarding Turkish universities operating on Syrian territory and affirmed the continuation of coordination through official channels in preparation for the anticipated joint meeting next July.
