Radif Mustafa, Director of the Accountability and Justice Department at Syria’s National Authority for Transitional Justice, said on Saturday that uncovering the truth about crimes involving the use of chemical weapons in Syria is a right of the victims and a duty incumbent upon the Authority.
In remarks carried by Syrian News Channel, Mustafa said that around 70% of the pilots who took part in bombing Syrians are now in the hands of justice. He stressed that accountability for crimes involving the use of chemical weapons constitutes a national commitment shared by all state institutions.
He added that providing reparations and compensation to victims of these cases and crimes is a national responsibility, primarily borne by the government, stressing the need to work toward securing justice for those affected and safeguarding their rights.
Mustafa also pointed to the need to formulate a comprehensive national narrative regarding the various crimes committed by the former regime, in a manner that preserves victims’ rights and brings the truth to light before society.
He explained that Syria’s transitional justice experience is still in its early stages and requires significant efforts and adequate resources to complete accountability, justice, and reparation cases in a manner consistent with victims’ rights and the requirements of the transitional phase.
