The Ministry of Culture commemorates the anniversary of the passing of the Syrian thinker and reformer Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi (1854–1902), one of the most prominent figures of the modern Arab Renaissance and the author of a reformist intellectual project that contributed to establishing the concepts of freedom, awareness, and reform in Arab thought.
Al-Kawakibi is regarded as one of the leading intellectuals who confronted the issues of political and social despotism during his time. He devoted his intellectual efforts to advocating renaissance and progress, raising awareness of the importance of social participation, and promoting the building of a state founded on justice and freedom. He left behind a number of influential works that became key references in Arab reformist thought, most notably his renowned book The Nature of Tyranny and the Downfall of Enslavement (Taba’i al-Istibdad wa Masari’ al-Isti’bad), in which he presented a profound analysis of the effects of tyranny on societies and individuals, calling for intellectual and political liberation as an essential pathway to advancement and progress.
Al-Kawakibi also enriched the Arab intellectual movement through his ideas advocating religious, social, and political reform. His writings have remained present in intellectual and cultural discussions throughout subsequent decades due to their forward-looking vision and their treatment of issues that continue to hold relevance in the contemporary Arab world.
On this occasion, the Ministry of Culture emphasized the importance of remembering Arab intellectual figures who contributed to shaping cultural awareness and promoting the values of freedom, responsibility, and reform. The Ministry noted that Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi’s intellectual legacy continues to inspire successive generations and remains an active presence in Arab cultural memory.
