The Internal Security Command in Idlib Governorate announced the arrest of a group it said belonged to remnants of the former regime, accusing it of operating cells specialized in espionage and carrying out bombing operations during the rule of Assad.
The head of Internal Security in Idlib, Brigadier General Ghassan Baakir, stated that investigations showed the detainees were involved in security tasks on behalf of the former regime, including monitoring military sites and photographing them, and sending precise coordinates to the air force and artillery units in order to target them.
He added that members of the group participated in coordinating the entry of booby-trapped cars and motorcycles, in addition to explosive devices, and working to detonate them in densely populated civilian areas. He noted that confessions attributed to them responsibility for a number of bombings that targeted vital locations in the city of Idlib, including Al-Malaab roundabout, Al-Sabaa Bahrat roundabout, and Al-Arbaeen and Al-Thalathin streets, according to what was reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Baakir also indicated that investigations revealed that members of the network recruited new operatives to collect information and secure smuggling routes for individuals involved in previous operations, as well as receiving financial and logistical support and direct instructions from officers in the intelligence services of the former regime.
