As part of ongoing efforts to protect cultural heritage and preserve archaeological and historical sites, a delegation from the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums conducted a field visit to the Antiquities Directorate in Tartous Governorate. The visit aimed to closely assess the condition of several prominent archaeological sites in the governorate, evaluate their current status, and monitor encroachments and violations that may affect their historical and cultural significance.
The delegation began its tour with a visit to the historic Arwad Island, where members inspected its ancient fortress, assessed its structural condition, and discussed maintenance and conservation needs for this important landmark, which represents a vital part of the cultural and historical identity of the Syrian coast.
The tour also included a visit to the archaeological site of Amrit, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region. The delegation reviewed the condition of the ancient temple and the historic stadium, conducting field inspections to evaluate the state of these archaeological structures and the extent to which they have been affected by various factors. Existing encroachments and violations within the protected boundaries of the archaeological sites were also documented, and the necessary measures to address them were examined in accordance with approved legal and technical frameworks, ensuring the protection and preservation of these sites for future generations.
The visit emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination between the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, the Antiquities Directorate of Tartous, and relevant authorities to continuously monitor the condition of archaeological sites and implement plans and procedures that safeguard their historical and cultural value as an essential part of Syria’s national heritage.
