The theater of the Arab Cultural Center in Al-Mazzeh hosted a heritage lecture titled “Al-Mazzeh Through the Eyes of Time,” presented by Ms. Rayan Saeed and attended by a distinguished audience of heritage enthusiasts and local history researchers. The event aimed to highlight the rich cultural and historical legacy of Al-Mazzeh and the authentic features that have formed an important part of Damascus’ collective memory.

The lecture opened with a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, creating a spiritual atmosphere before the speaker moved on to discuss the origins of the name “Al-Mazzeh,” its geographical location, and its historical significance. She provided a concise overview of the area’s establishment and development over time, as well as the social and urban transformations it experienced while preserving its unique heritage and identity.

Ms. Saeed also reviewed some of Al-Mazzeh’s most prominent historical and religious landmarks, particularly its old mosques and heritage sites. She spoke about the traditional professions and crafts practiced by the residents of the area, which contributed to shaping its economic and social identity, in addition to its rich folk heritage of customs, traditions, and values passed down through generations.

The lecture further explored traditional clothing that reflected the distinctive character and lifestyle of Al-Mazzeh’s society. A detailed explanation was given of men’s traditional attire, including the Qanbaz, Abaya, and Saya, highlighting their social and cultural significance. Attention was also devoted to women’s traditional dress, especially the Mazzeh Abaya, which became a defining feature of local women’s heritage clothing and symbolized the identity and uniqueness of women in Al-Mazzeh.

The event concluded with a notable participation by women dressed in the traditional Mazzeh Abaya, who gathered for a commemorative heritage photograph. The scene revived memories of traditional social life and underscored the importance of preserving and transmitting this cultural legacy to future generations as an integral part of Syria’s national identity and rich heritage.

This event forms part of ongoing cultural activities aimed at promoting awareness of local heritage and reviving collective memory, contributing to the preservation of cultural traditions and introducing younger generations to their historical and human value.
