Radeef Mustafa, Director of the Accountability and Prosecution Department at the National Authority for Transitional Justice, said that the verdict issued against defendant Atef Najib represents a “pivotal milestone” in the process of accountability for grave crimes, stressing that the case had completed its judicial stages and procedures in accordance with the law.
Mustafa explained that the verdict issued today sends a clear message that grave crimes do not lapse due to political changes or changing circumstances, stressing that such cases must be addressed through the judiciary and within the framework of the rule of law, in a manner that safeguards the rights of all parties to the case and ensures fair-trial standards.
He added that the Authority views the verdict as “an important step, not the end of the process,” noting that other cases remain under follow-up, while some trials have reached advanced stages.
The Director of the Accountability and Prosecution Department affirmed that work is continuing under a comprehensive strategy aimed at consolidating the principles of accountability and prosecution and ensuring that perpetrators do not escape punishment, thereby contributing to achieving justice and redress for victims through a judicial and institutional process.
