The German Archaeological Institute in Berlin (DAI) hosted the Director General of Antiquities and Museums, Dr. Masoud Badawi, in late May 2026 on an official visit aimed at strengthening joint cooperation between Syria and Germany in the fields of cultural heritage protection and preservation, as well as advancing digital documentation methods for archaeological and historical sites.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to expand scientific and technical partnership between heritage-related institutions in both countries, with a focus on leveraging modern technologies in documenting archaeological sites and managing related data. This would contribute to supporting efforts to preserve Syria’s civilizational heritage and rehabilitate damaged sites.
The discussions highlighted Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects for the cities of Damascus and Palmyra, which aim to establish integrated digital databases containing precise archaeological, architectural, and geographical information. These databases are intended to provide modern tools for documentation, monitoring, conservation, and future planning of restoration and rehabilitation projects.
Both sides emphasized the importance of these initiatives in enhancing cultural heritage management in line with international standards, and in providing a comprehensive digital reference for researchers and specialists. They also stressed their role in supporting decision-making processes related to the protection of archaeological sites and the preservation of their historical and cultural value for future generations.
The talks come within the framework of ongoing cooperation between the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums and the German Archaeological Institute, which includes the implementation of joint research and scientific projects aimed at protecting and documenting Syrian heritage using the latest digital technologies.
