The French newspaper Le Monde has stated that Israel’s policies in southern Syria, particularly the support provided by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to separatist movements in Suwayda Governorate, have contributed to creating a security paradox in the region.
The newspaper explained that while Damascus and Amman are making joint efforts to enhance stability, combat organized crime, and dismantle its networks, Israeli support for these movements has reinforced a state of disorder and transformed the area into a zone beyond the rule of law.
It added that Israel’s strategy is based on keeping Syria weak and divided in a way that serves its interests and provides it with greater room to achieve regional gains.
According to Le Monde, the consequences of this situation have gone beyond weakening Syrian state institutions, as it has also helped create a safe environment for Captagon trafficking networks, turning southern Syria into an active center for drug smuggling operations that pose a threat to regional security.
The newspaper also noted that the prevailing security vacuum in Suwayda, combined with its proximity to the Jordanian border, has enabled individuals and networks linked to the former regime to reorganize their activities and take advantage of the existing conditions.
