In a move signaling a profound shift in Syria’s cultural landscape following the fall of the Assad regime, Syrian Minister of Culture, Mohammad Yassin Saleh, has appointed internationally renowned Syrian actor Jay  Abdo as Director General of the General Organization for Cinema. The appointment has been widely seen by observers as part of a broader effort to inject new energy into the country’s film sector, grounded in merit, experience, and a deep commitment to the values of the Syrian revolution and freedom.

According to a statement by the Ministry, the appointment is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at restructuring Syria’s cultural institutions on professional and national foundations. The goal is to integrate talents that bridge local expertise with global experience, enabling the production of cinema that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people and preserves the collective memory of their struggle.

Jay  Abdo is widely recognized as one of the most prominent Syrian artists to have publicly opposed the Assad regime since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in March 2011. His outspoken stance led to repeated harassment, ultimately forcing him to leave Syria. He later settled in the United States, where he successfully continued his acting career, appearing in major international films, including Queen of the Desert alongside Nicole Kidman and Rosewater, directed by Jon Stewart.

Throughout his career, Abdo has remained a vocal critic of authoritarianism, often emphasizing that true art must not serve the oppressor. In previous interviews, he stated, “Art cannot be an instrument of the executioner. True cinema must stand on the side of humanity and dignity.” He described his stance against the regime not as a political choice, but as a deeply moral and human obligation.

His new role is expected to spark a revitalization of Syria’s cinematic output—one that documents the suffering endured by Syrians under repression and war, while also elevating cinema as a tool for awareness, resistance, and memory. For years, the General Organization for Cinema served as a propaganda arm of the regime. Abdo’s leadership marks a potential turning point in reclaiming it as a space for genuine cultural expression.

The appointment is also seen as a symbolic gesture of recognition and restoration for exiled and marginalized cultural figures who were long sidelined under the old regime. It signals the beginning of a new era in rebuilding state institutions rooted in the ideals of the revolution and liberated from political and ideological subservience.
